The game of perception and how to play it without being arrogant

“I don’t understand why I have to talk about myself, why can’t people just see that I am great.” I stopped counting the amount of times I have heard those words. “I don’t want to appear arrogant.”

So often I coach leaders who are looking for their next promotion, but they feel icky thinking about promoting themselves. They get annoyed when they get feedback that doesn’t feel true to them and feel the truth of their skills and effort should be obvious to everyone.

But I am here to share the bad news with you. It isn’t always obvious and how you present yourself has a lot to do with how people perceive you.

Perception and facts are often not same, but if you are dealing with other people, you have to accept their perceptions as valid.
